Second hand is about giving an item a second life by enabling it to find a new owner. It’s also about being aware of the environmental impact of over-consumption.

These are the reasons why student representatives and teachers Ms Köwenig and Ms Roig came up with the idea of organising a second hand clothing and book sale. Or, to be more precise, to “reorganise” such a sale. Indeed, at the end of last year, the same team had already organised a similar event.

But why in December? Mrs Köwenig replies that this is an opportunity to buy Christmas presents cheaply and responsibly.

The idea was accepted and implemented, as on Saturday, 9 December 2023, the school’s entrance hall was transformed into a huge wardrobe!

To make a purchase, real euros had to be exchanged for “1 euro paper tickets” sold at the single till, run by the two teachers.

The “entrance hall dressing room” sometimes resembled a fitting room! You could see a shopper passing over her t-shirt, a little gold top, “delighted at the idea of shining for the festive season”, or a young child trying on hats whose mother was “delighted with the choice of colours”.

Others were leafing through books. One shopper said she was “delighted to find short novels in German to give to her son”.

The profits will be used “to finance class projects”, explains Mrs Köwenig. “Only classes from seconde to terminale are concerned” specifies a student who is satisfied that “her items can still be used”.

The unsold items were donated to the charity Emmaüs Forbach and Friperie Saint Nicolas in Sarreguemines.

The team will be holding another sale in the spring, “the date has not yet been set” says the teacher.
