The word of the week: Valentine
Chocolate, roses, cards, paper hearts – these are the things that come into the mind of most people when they hear the word « Valentine », but what is Valentine really about?
Well, this whole Valentine thing comes from Saint Valentine, a man who lived in Rome a very long time ago and who was martyred because of his Christian faith. So, later in the 18th century people started celebrating his feast day (the 14th of February) by sending Valentine cards or chocolate to their loved ones. But it didn’t become popular until the 19th century.
Today, it’s a day for couples to give presents to each other or just having a good time with your best friends. In different countries there are different traditions, and some countries don’t even celebrate Valentine’s day! Well, it also depends on religion. Since St. Valentine is a Roman Catholic saint, other religions won’t celebrate it the same way as Roman Catholics do. So, there are lots of ways to celebrate Valentine, but you don’t have to. It’s not even a local holiday anywhere. So, there are about three options: you do nothing or just treat yourself to something; you go do something fun with your friends or with your girlfriend / boyfriend / married partner; or you go make some Valentine presents to give to your favorite people.
