Let’s bake! Devil’s Food cake recipe
Spring is here, the sun is shining, let’s be decadent and enjoy a devilishly good cake! If you don’t like chocolate, that’s not the recipe for you. But if you do, grab your baking gear!
Ingredients:
For the frosting / icing:
- 225 g chocolate
- 175 g butter
- 100 ml heavy cream
- A pinch of salt
For the sponge cake:
- 75 g cocoa powder
- 80 g brown sugar
- 120 g caster sugar
- 335 g flour
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1 tablespoon baking soda
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 375 ml boiling water
- 3 eggs
Start with the frosting: melt the chocolate, the butter, the cream and the salt together in a bain-marie (a water bath) until you get a smooth texture. Then, let the frosting cool down.
Now whisk the cocoa powder, the brown sugar, the vanilla and the boiling water together.
In another bowl, whisk the butter and the caster sugar together. Then, add the eggs one by one and mix well between each egg.
In a third bowl, mix the flour, the baking soda and the baking powder together.
Finally, fold the flour mixture into the egg mixture. Then, add the cocoa powder mixture and mix well until you get a smooth texture.
Pour the batter into 3 greased cake pans and bake them for 25 minutes at 170°C.
Let the cakes cool down (preferably on a wire rack). When they are ready, it’s time to stack them on top of one another! Put some of the topic on top of the first cake, then place the second one on top of it. Do the same with the third cake, and cover the whole pile with the rest of the frosting.
Decorate… and enjoy! It’s a bit trickier than the previous recipes, but it’s worth the effort. Try it and let us know what you think!
